The GTO program in U.S.S.R.
Back in the U.S.S.R., people of all ages expected to participate in the GTO program ("Gotov k trudu i oborone" or “Ready for Labour and Defense”), which was introduced in 1931. Over sixty years all soviet people passed regularly physical training tests.
"Gotov k trudu i oborone", or
“Ready for Labour and Defence”
-3810-3810The GTO system's purposes were to encourage sport in the everyday life of the Soviet people, to improve military preparedness and personal hygiene, to teach civic defense, therefore, it covered the population aged 10 to 60 years.
The GTO program had five age levels. Let’s take
Brave and Adroit (for boys and girls 10 to 13 years old);
Rising Generation (for boys and girls 14 to 15 years old);
Strong and Courageous (for boys and girls 16 to 18 years old);
Physical Perfection (men 19 to 39, women 19 to 34);
Vigour and Health (men 40 to 60, women 45 to 55).
The GTO program provided training in running, high jump and long jump, discus, javelin, and shot put throwing, swimming, ski racing and shooting. Although the GTO tests were very difficult, millions of soviet people met GTO standards.
In fact, taking part in the GTO program people participated in the sports movement, got information on physical culture and sport, trained for civil defense and took advice on personal and public hygiene.
People who met the standards at each level were awarded a gold or silver GTO badge depending on their achievements. The winners were invited on television and in the state press.
Nowadays this program gets the second breath. President Vladimir Putin signed a law that reintroduces Soviet physical training standards known as “Ready for Labor and Defense” since the Russian youth must "stand up for themselves, their family and the Fatherland." It’s time so that Russian young people return to their history and sports achievements.
