The United States Constitution The United States is an indirect democracy – that the people rule through the representatives they elect. In the beginning, only white men with property could vote. Today any citizen who is at least 18 years old can vote. On April 30, 1789 George Washington was placed in office, as the first President of the United States. The first President The War for Independence In the April 19, 177,the tension which existed between the colonists and the British led to shooting. British soldiers met a group of armed colonists at Lexington. A shot was fired. That shot was the start of the War for Independence. The Second continental congress In spring of 1775 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. They met to organize an army and navy to defend and support colonial rights. Bronze stature of Thomas Jefferson now stands on the upper campus of The University of Virginia’s College. Thomas Jefferson In the declaration Jefferson describe his ideas about human rights. He said that all people had the right to life and liberty. Declaration of Independence In the spring of 1776 the Continental Congress decided to take action. Thomas Jefferson was asked to write a declaration explaining why the colonies should be free.On July 4, 1776, the Congress adopted Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. The United States Constitution, written in 1787, established the county’s political system and is the basis for its laws. The Constitution The Bill of Rights In 1791 ten Amendments were added to the Constitution. These ten amendments are known as The Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights declares that the national government will protect the basic rights and freedoms of every American citizen. Questions When was the Constitution of the country written?
