The International Day for Tolerance is celebrated on the 16th of November every year Tolerance Day, was declared by UNESCO in its Declaration of Principles on Tolerance in 1995. Two years later UN General Assembly also suggested that this day be celebrated by its member-states. The United Nations Charter states: 'We, the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, ... to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, ... and for these ends to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors’, The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that 'Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion' (Article 18), 'of opinion and expression' (Article 19), and that education 'should promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups' (Article 26) Во Всеобщей декларации прав человека провозглашается, что «каждый человек имеет право на свободу мысли, совести и религии (статья 18), «на свободу убеждений и на свободное выражение их», (статья 19), и что образование «должно содействовать взаимопониманию, терпимости и дружбе между всеми народами, расовыми и религиозными группами» (статья 26) So, what does tolerance mean? “Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human.” Что означает слово толерантность? Терпимость - уважение, принятие богатого разнообразия наших всемирных культур, чужого мнения и верования, способов и форм выражения. Situation 1I don’t belong Nasim didn’t talk to any of the girls that week. The teachers were all kind to her and some of them remembered to speak slowly when they talking to her, though some, like Mr. Brown, shouted. Miss Peters always smiled at her and repeated things for her, but Mr. Bead was the only one who ever sat down by her when he had set work for the others, and she always shrank away from him. When someone shouted out a remark to her, which she didn’t understand but which made everyone else laugh, she burned inside , knowing that they must be laughing at her, though she didn’t understand. She spent break and lunchtime in the classroom. She didn’t say anything about all this at home. How could they imagine what it was like for her? At night she whispered into the silence “I don’t belong”. Read the text again and choose the correct answer to the questions 1.
