Nepova Marina, 11 b “People, read books – some of them were written specially for it”. (M. Henin) The history of books The first step in books history was inventing of the papyrus sheets which were glued each to other. It had a form of a scroll. The world-famous poem “Odyssey” was written in such way.The second step was inventing of the parchment. It It was cheap and it let people cut it and create books of a smaller size. The third step was inventing of paper. It was very cheap, it made books accessible for many people. But at that time people wrote books with their hands. Though it was very beautiful, the process of writing of one book was long and difficult. Firstly books began to be typed in Korea and in China, but this technology was very primitive. The real break on this way was made in Europe, when the German inventor Iogann Gutenberg in the 15th century created the typing engine. The Bible was the first book, which was typed with the help of that engine. GENRES. There are a lot of different literary genres, which were formed through the centuries. Some of them are – Classicism, Sentimentalism, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, Futurism and so on. Each of them has its own orders and features. Books are different… There are a lot of kinds of books. In almost every town people can find dictionaries, encyclopedias, historical books, school books, feature literature and so on. There are a lot of different genres of literature. It depends on people’s tastes. Somebody prefers fairytales and romantic stories, the other one is keen on detective stories and science fiction. So, everybody can find something interesting for himself. Traditional book vs electronic book Now-a-days there are a lot of discussions on the questions of what is better: the traditional book or the electronic book. Of course, both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, it is much more comfortable to take a pocket computer with a thousand books in a trip, than to take 5 or 6 traditional books. Also, the electronic books are much more cheaper. If you lost it, you will be able to get a new one without any problems. And if you live in a small town, it is much more easier to find an electronic book. But on the other hand, it is more comfortable to read traditional books, because your eyes aren’t getting tired so fast. And, I think, the traditional book looks more beautiful, you can touch it. Audio books. One of the modern inventions is an audio book. Some people consider it to be more preferable than traditional book. As for me, I think, that an audio book is a decision of two categories of people: the first one is little children, who can not read by themselves, but like fairytales; the second one is the blind, who can not read traditional books at all. Also there is another category of people: the lazy. Of course, they prefer audio books. But I think, if they stop reading – one day they will stop thinking. Everybody knows them… There are a lot of different writers, who had written their books in different centuries. Not all of them became world-famous. But everybody knows such writers as: Mark Twain, G.G. Byron, Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Shakespeare, Herbert Wells, Victor Hugo, F.M. Dostoevsky and many others. Famous people about books… Why do we need books?.. Everybody needs rest and pleasure. Everybody needs someone to talk to and someone who understand you. So, everybody needs friends. I think, the book can give us a lot. And sometimes a book is a sunny ray in the darkness, it is a thread in a labyrinth of life, it is a medicine for a soul.
