WINNIE THE POOH For many decades children and adults all over the world have been very fond of the fictional character, Winnie the Pooh. The author of the book, Alan Alexander Milne, never considered himself a children’s writer. However, it was the bear character who gave him the fame and world recognition.Alan Milne was born in England in 1882. He was the youngest of the three sons in the family. His father, Scottish by origin, was a headmaster of a small public school in London where Alan and his two brothers started taking their classes. In 1893 Alan won a scholarship to Westminster School and then continued his education at Cambridge where he studied Mathematics. He graduated from Cambridge with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics but devoted a lot of his time and energy to writing. He wrote for the university magazine in Cambridge, for several magazines and newspapers in London, published novels, comedies, dramas, and detective stories. The stories of Winnie the Pooh were written to amuse Alan’s son, Christopher Robin. The leading characters were a small boy and his teddy bear. Christopher Robin’s stuffed toys inspired most of the book characters. The toy tiger, piglet, donkey, and the others are still displayed at the New York Public Library. The characters of Owl and Rabbit, however, were created completely from Alan Milne’s imagination. The Winnie the Pooh books were first published in 1925.In the middle of the 20th century the Walt Disney Company bought the rights to Winnie the Pooh characters and animated them. It is the most popular cartoon that has ever been produced by the company. Naturally, national animated films about Winnie the Pooh appeared in other countries too. The critics say that the Russian animated version most closely presents the original stories from Milne’s book. However, Winnie the Poor from the Russian cartoon looks very different. It doesn’t resemble the bear from the illustrations in Milne’s book at all. Example: Alan Milne was born in Scotland.England6. Alan Milne’s father was a writer7.
