Izmaylova Elizaveta Alikhanovna School 540 St Petersburg 2013 History *This holiday is named after not one, but TWO early Christian martyrs named Valentine.*Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine’s Days for each of the Christian martyrs named Valentine.*The Valentine’s honored on February 14th are Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. *These martyrs did not have anything to do with romance. Valentine was a priest who refused to follow the Roman Emperor Claudius II’s law, which ordered that all young men remain single. This law was started so that the army would grow. The priest Valentine threw weddings secretly, and the King threw him in jail when he found out. He wrote the first “Valentine” to his girlfriend the night he was going to be executed. He signed it, “from your Valentine.” A MYTH Paris established a “High Court of Love” on Valentine’s Day in 1400. The Court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. A panel of women selected the judges by their poetry readings.The earliest valentine we know of is a fifteenth-century one written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife.Valentine’s Day is mentioned in William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” by Ophelia Valentine’s Day was transformed in approximately 1840 into a romantic holiday in which people like to celebrate their love for one another.It is estimated that the first modern Valentine was created in 1840.Valentine’s from the past: In Finland, Valentine’s Day’s name translates into “Friends Day,” and is a day to celebrate friends. It is similar in Estonia.In Slovenia, Valentine’s Day marks the beginning of spring, or the day when the flowers start to grow. In Turkey, Valentine’s Day’s translation means “Sweetheart’s Day”Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated in South America, although Brazil moved it to the summer for religious reasons.In Japan, it has become an obligation for all women to give chocolates to their male co-workers.In South Korea, women give chocolate to men on February 14th, men give non-chocolate candy to women on March 14th, and on April 14th (Black Day) people who did not receive anything either day go to a Chinese restaurant, eat black noodles, and “mourn” their single lives. About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged in US each year. That's the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas. Women purchase 85% of all valentines. In order of popularity, Valentine's Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets. Parents receive 1 out of every 5 valentines. About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets. Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the biggest holidays for giving flowers. Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year.
