Egypt borders on the Mediterranean Sea in the north, Israel and the Red Sea in the east, Sudan in the south, and Libya in the west.The climate is arid and dry. The capital of the country is Cairo. Egypt is the gift of the Nile, the longest river in the world. The vast majority of the population lives in the Nile Valley. 96 percent of Egypt’s territory is a desert with a few oases. The official language of Egypt is Arabic. HistoryIn ancient times the valley of the "long river between the deserts" was the seat of one of the earliest civilizations built by humankind. It was known for its development of hieroglyphic writing and its achievements in agriculture, art and architecture. It was the period of Pharaohs. The pyramids were royal tombs. Today they are the visiting card of modern Egypt and the monument to the disappearing civilization. Egypt is a Former British colonyBritish rule lasted from 1882 to 1952.The Egyptian revolution made Egypt a republic and British advisers were expelled. 90 percent of Egyptians are Muslims.
