What is it like to be British?By Strutskaya Lyubov, student of the 7th grade of MBEI of Astrakhan "School № 27" The relevance of our work is determined by the continuing interest in the UK and the bearers of British culture in the light of historical and contemporary events and because of the growing importance of English as a general educational subject for Russian schoolchildren.Hypothesis: the British are a unique nation with a long and rich history; the British have a positive response among the young generation of Russia. The goal is to study the aspects that make up the expression "to be British."Objectives are to study formation of the British people from antiquity to modern times; to make a description of modern British, including features of appearance and mentality of the current representatives of this nation; to find out how schoolchildren of the city of Astrakhan see the modern British. Theoretical conclusionsAs it turned out, a typical resident of the United Kingdom is a white British forty-year-old woman, who lives in England (in London or in the southeast of the country) and has got different roots. Her ancestors were Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings or Normans. A typical British belongs to the Anglican church, is engaged in housekeeping (not formally employed), has good health and lives on average up to 82 years. The ideals of the British are independence, education, dignity, honesty and unselfishness, tact, graceful manners, exquisite courtesy, the ability to sacrifice time and money for a good cause, the ability to lead and obey, perseverance in achieving the goal, lack of swagger. Photo portraits of ideal British(based on British surveys) Empirical researchSome students of secondary school № 27 in the city of Astrakhan were selected as respondents by chance. 83 people took part in our survey. The age of respondents varies between 9 and 17 years. The gender composition is almost the same: in the four groups most are represented by girls, in the other four groups - by boys.We asked the survey participants to describe in three words the British, that is, to answer the question "What do you think the British are?" / "How do you imagine the British?". Empirical researchThe 1st place is the definition "good", on the 2nd - "smart", "kind", "funny", "interesting", on the 3rd - "beautiful", "cheerful", "friendly", "well-behaved". Empirical researchIt should be noted that the absolute majority of respondents described the British in words with a positive value. It was also found that the older the respondents, the more often we met words related to the moral assessment of the British (for example, "well-behaved"). Students of 9-12 years tend to evaluate the British by external parameters (for example, "beautiful").We explain the existence of such a pattern by the psychological characteristics of the age groups of respondents. Main conclusionBeing British means being the heir of traditions and an exceptionally rich history that has had an immeasurable impact on what is now our modern world. We learned what the British were like before and how they see themselves now. The results of our empirical study have shown that being British means being a good, interesting, intelligent and worthy person. Thus, we achieved the goal of research work and confirmed the hypothesis of the study.
