The legend about the origin of the Kazan’s name
Kazan appeared many years ago. It was situated on the seven hills like the Ancient Rome. And there are a lot of legends which explain the origin of the name. But the most interesting legend says about big pan – tatar people call it “kazan”.
Once Khan’s son with his servants was escaping from Mongols. Suddenly he became one of the riverbank. He was tired and wanted to drink, so he told servant to bring him some water in a gold boiler. But servant dropped that Kazan in the river. Khan’s son decided that it was a sign of God and started building among the river. That was created the city, which later became the capital of Tatarstan and the border between Europe and Asia.

Legend about origin of emblem Story about origin of Kazan’s emblem is wonderful, too. It’s strange, that emblem has never been changed. Emblem shows us a legendary dragon, called Zilant. Dragon has a gold crown on his head. What was the main reason to choose such a strange symbol?
The legend says, that there were a lot of snake living around Kazan. A place, where they used to live, called snake’s mountain. Then khan invited sages and asked for a tip. Sages suggested putting straw around the mountain and burning the snakes. They choose one of the men and explained him what he had to do. But when he was about to finish work one snake suddenly attacked him and killed.

But his request was finished and snakes left Kazan’s territory. There was just the snake, which killed the boy. It was left on the Kazan’s emblem.
