Оh, Mary El, my native land!
I sing this song for you.
It will be not my farewell
It will be something new.
It will be running like a stream, like summer nightingale.
This song will be a drop of dew, oh, dear Mary El!
My God! Yoshkar-Ola at night
Produces an impressive sight.
The stars are twinkling in the sky
Reflecting on the river’s glide.
In every season it looks great
My land, my place of birth.
In spring with sunny smiling ray
In winter, when it’s frost.
In autumn with the falling leaf and tender drops of rain.
I trust the beauty1 I believe
That time will come again!

Hello, everybody. We are going to speak today about our native city – Yoshkar-Ola. Needless to say we all like our home town and would like it to be more prosperous and beautiful. Today we’ll try to find different ways to carry out this task. You were divided into several groups and had to prepare projects. Let us see what you have managed to do. Be attentive and prepare questions to your classmates. The first group was called “The tour guides”.
1). We’ll show you the old part of Yoshkar-Ola. We’ll begin our excursion with K/ Marks Street – the most historic street of the town. Before 1918 it was called Ascension Street and there was Ascension Cathedral in the same street. It was a monument of architecture of the 18th century. Unfortunately it wasn’t restored. For a long time it was used as a beer factory. Today the cathedral has been restored. You can see its cupola above the skyline.
2). Next to the Cathedral you can see Pchelin’s house – the city’s oldest stone building. The wealthy merchant Pchelin provided the town with the sum of money necessary to build a church. The next house is the house of the industrial forester Chulkov. It is made of the red brick and decorated with the open-work moldings. House # 49 was the house of the merchant Korepov. If you are fond of history and architecture you should walk along this street.
3). The Museum of regional studies was organized in 1920. But it was open to the public only in 1924. At that time the museum was situated in Sovetskaya Street. The first director of the Museum was T. Evseyev. He collected the materials on history and ethnography of the Mary Region. During the Great Patriotic war all the exhibits of the Museum were removed to the settlement of Vyatskoye. Only in the 1960-s the building of the Museum was rebuilt and it became the 3-storeyd building. The Museum contains 3 departments: nature, pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary periods. The Museum has 5 branches in Volzhsk, Orshanka, Mary-Turek, Chavainur and the memorial Museum of Kluchnikov-Palantai in Yoshkar-Ola. Today there are about 100 000 exhibits in the Museum, among them precious metals, rare documents, books, manuscripts, the samples of the folk clothes and the decorations of the Mary people. The Museum also represents the flora and fauna of the Mary Region.
4). The Central Republican Library was founded in 1922. This building is situated in Pushkin Street. It was built before the Great Patriotic War for the largest library of our Republic. At that time there were 400 000 books in the library, now it has more than 1 million. The central library has 3 buildings, two of which were built a few years ago. In the library there are big and small reading rooms where people can sit and read books, magazines, newspapers. On the whole in our city there are 155 libraries with more than 6 million books.
5). The Mary National Drama Theatre was opened in 1920. It was housed in different buildings. The present building with its beautiful columns was opened in Lenin Square in 1960. It has a hall for 800 people. The plays here are performed in the national language with the translation into the Russian language. The repertoire of the Theatre is very wide. “Salika” is one of the national historical plays staged in this theatre. Many actors and actresses are honored artists of the Russian Federation.
Where do you usually find information for your reports?
Does it take much time to work out a plan of an excursion?
Do tourists ask many questions after the excursions? Can you always answer them? ,etc.
2. Now let us listen to the second group who prepared the model of the new square.
1). We are worried about the present state of our town (lack of jobs, low salary, etc.) so we decided to work out a project to make our town a tourist destination and to make the town prosper. In our group the responsibilities ere distributed in the following way: Denis was responsible for interviewing schoolmates and doing research. He had to find out what people would like the group to do to make the town more beautiful. The most typical answers were to make new parks and squares. Max and Helen were responsible designing the model. They used different materials: plastic, cardboard, glue, paper to make the model.
2). We are planning to implement this project behind our school. It will be an area for relaxation. The square will be framed with the fur trees. In the center you can see a beautiful fountain. Around the fountain there are some cozy benches so that people can have a rest on a hot day and enjoy the water sprays.
3). The alleys will be well-lit in the evening and the lights will be of different colours. We are going to get in touch with the local authorities and if our project is approved of, we’ll try to find a sponsor who will invest money into this project. The project won’t require large investments and all the people will benefit from it.
How much money is necessary to carry out your project?
Is it difficult to find sponsors for your projects?
Isn’t it better to spend money on building new houses instead of squares? , etc.
3. Оur third group will introduce local crafts and designs to the foreign guests. Let’s listen to them.
1). Our ancestors made linens and embroidered them beautifully, like real masters. They thought that embroideries would protect them from evil spirits. They depicted mostly the sun, the animals and birds. The sun means “kindness”, the flower is a sign of wealth, different birds mean the good prospects in life. They put these images on their clothes: on the collar, the sleeves. You can see different ornaments on the towels and napkins, carpets, table cloths/ They are easily harmonize with any modern interior.
2). Our next exhibit is a wedding dress. It consists of a dress, an apron and a special fur-cap. The clothes are decorated with the embroidery too. They are richly decorated with pendants and silver coins. Silver embellishments were saved up in the family for decades and handed down from mother to daughter. Embellishments belonged to the wife and the husband didn’t have the right to this property. In additions to silver coins, embellishments were often made of beads, glass beads, buttons, shells. Glittering coins symbolized the sun, and the tinkling of silver coins was believed to drive away the evil spirits. If embroideries spoke for the woman’s diligence, embellishments showed her wealth. Embellishments in combination with dress created a peculiar and unique complex of every ethnic group.
3). This exhibit is an every day clothes for a man and a woman. The man’s shirt is decorated with embroidery. It looks like a tunika, has a belt on the waist. The woman’s dress is also decorated with embroidery. Embroidering was the most popular kind of women’s creative work and is notable for the variety of forms. In the past every woman could embroider and her abilities were judged by her embroideries. Embroidery required great skill. Patterns had to be arranged in such a way that symmetry order shouldn’t be broken. The Mary women tried to teach their daughters embroidering as soon as possible. For her wedding the girl had to prepare embroidered dresses for herself and shirts for her future husband as well as the presents for relatives.
4). The Mary used birch bark and lime-tree bast to make different in form and size boxes and baskets. Oak was used to make rings for baking bread. Basket work from twigs of mountain ash and cherry trees was very popular with the Mountain Mary. I’m doing different souvenirs to sell them in my own shop.
Do you/ your parents wear national clothes?
Can you embroider yourself?
Do you think making souvenirs is a profitable business?, etc.
