Introduction. The role of free time in human life.
Free time is time when a person is having a rest from main activities of the day. An adult person has a rest from work, students – from school. Everyone arranges his rest as he/she likes. Some people relax in front of TV, others take educational courses, some people enjoy travelling while others prefer gardening or doing sports. But they all have a rest.
Let us imagine that a person didn’t have this precious and wonderful time. What would he/she do? Maybe, he/she would work the whole day, he/she wouldn’t see the family, he/she wouldn’t meet friends. The life would be like a plot of a space film: a strict timetable, a planned movement around the world, no unnecessary thing. The man would transform into a robot. And students would study the whole day. They would not have time for childhood. But it is impossible. Every person needs a rest.
That’s why we decided to find out what free time is, how teenagers spend it, and if it is possible to enhance the amount of it.
The problem is: every person needs free time to recuperate for full activity. But many teenagers state that they don’t have enough free time.
Our aim is to find out if they are right.

The main part.
What is free time?
To find out the meaning of the word “free time” we looked down into some dictionaries. The Philosophy Dictionary says that “free time is non-working time that is left after doing obligatory activities, such as sleep, meals, way to school / work, household chores. Free time is used for recreation, for physical and mental development of an individual. Free time includes studying, self-education, cultural activities (reading, going to a theatre, museums, and cinema), political activities, hobbies, passive relaxation”.
The dictionary of Social Statistics says that “Free time is time for cultural, mental, physical development and relaxation of the population. It involves visiting theatres, cinemas, concerts; watching TV, listening to the radio; reading newspapers, magazines, fictions; doing sports, walking; meetings, social activities; religious activities”.
Definition of leisure noun from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary:
leisure is time that is spent doing what you enjoy when you are not working or studying. For example: These days we have more money and more leisure to enjoy it.
Leisure is time spent not working. In many economic models leisure is regarded as a consumption good from which utility is derived.
Robert A. Stebbins in his article in Encyclopedia Britannica writes that
Leisure, freedom provided by the cessation (перерыв) of activities, particularly time free from disagreeable work or duties.
Leisure is universal. Under ordinary circumstances everyone experiences some of it. Taking leisure is also an ancient practice. Both Aristotle and Plato discussed the virtues of what can be described as serious leisure. Indeed, it is clear that leisure is as old as humanity.
Despite its universality, many people the world over have some trouble recognizing leisure even when they are engaging in it.
We can divide our life’s ordinary activities into three main branches: work, nonwork obligation, and leisure.
Work is an activity that one must do. Most people dislike work as an activity. If they could find a way of gaining that livelihood, they would be inclined to adopt it.
Nonwork obligation is the domain of all those disliked activities one must do that are done outside the domain of work. Many ordinary, sometimes daily, household chores fall into that category (e.g., washing dishes, cleaning house, and shoveling snow).
“Free time” in that definition refers to time away from unpleasant obligation. It is time when a person does something he/she especially enjoys. It should be time of a positive state of mind, pleasant expectations and exciting activities and situations.
But one can be bored in his or her free time, which can result from inactivity (having “nothing to do”) or from activity that is uninteresting or unstimulating. The same can, of course, happen at work and in obligated nonwork settings. Because boredom is a negative state of mind, it is not leisure at all. Besides it sometimes happens that expectations turn out to be unrealistic; individuals then get bored (or perhaps angry, frightened, or embarrassed) with the activity they do. That’s why it is very important to plan your free time and to think what will be useful, fun and interesting for you.
Teenagers and free time.
Teenagers use their free time in different ways. Some researchers believe that the problem of free time is especially actual for this age group.
The surveys say that nowadays free time for children is in the first line time for entertainment (playing computer games, reading, walking). The choice depends on interests, family income and the amount of free time.
The most part of young people doesn’t have a lot free time. Teenagers prefer passive forms of relaxation. The first place is taken by watching TV. What do young people prefer to watch? These are musical and entertainment programmes. TV provides few serious films, mostly these are soap operas, police series? Films about monsters, strangers and so on. We want to mention that TV is one of the informational sources, it affects the models of behavior, life stereotypes, builds fashion style, musical trends, and teen’s language. That’s why adults and parents should pay attention to the fact, how much time children spend in front of TV and what they watch.
Computer is another popular way to spend free time. We can hardly imagine our life without this useful and clever device. We use a computer to study, to work, to have fun. It has a lot of advantages: quick transmission of information, communication with friends, on-line shops, games, films and many other interesting things. According to researches teenagers use computer technologies in three ways: computer games (42%), doing homework (36%), communication via the Internet (22%). Many teenagers spend more than 4 hours in front of the screen it may be dangerous. Parents should remember that teens can get addicted to computers. It may be harmful for their physical and mental health. Computer games can be especially dangerous because they replace real life, change the understanding of the world around, make nervous and aggressive.
Unfortunately, the domain of intellectual relaxation is getting less. Reading books and magazines takes fewer places in the life of young people. Fewer and fewer people use free time for self development, for intellectual growth.
We wondered how teens in Britain spend free time.
Teenage leisure in the UK
left0 Computer games. Nowadays in Britain few teenagers play outside games with their friends. 85% of children prefer to play computer games alone. It is the fact that computer games are the most popular entertainment among teens in the UK. Opinion polls show that boys are more interested in computer games than girls.
2925445318135Television. Teens enjoy watching TV. In Britain watching TV with girls and boys is more popular than in any other European country. Often the TV set is switched on the whole day. Teens watch it before school and after school. More than a half of teens have their own TV set in the room.
Sport and physical exercises. Today many people in Great -132080408940Britain worry that teenagers don’t do sport enough. The fact is that less a half of teens play team games. 80% of young people prefer to watch sport but not play. Teenagers agree that their generation is lazier, fatter and more computer addicted. But they blame the local government. They say that local parks don’t have grounds for doing sports; sport centers are not free and too expensive for teens.
The main facts: the average time that British teens spend for sport games:
- 15-25 minutes a day among girls - 40-55 minutes a day among boysthe average time that British teens spend for watching TV:- 2,5 hours a day
As you see, teenagers all over the world are similar: they have the same interests and values.
Free time of our classmates (the results of the opinion poll)
We decided to find out how our classmates spend free time. We worked out a questionnaire and carried out an opinion poll. 30 teens took part in it. The questions and the full results of the survey are presented in the Appendixes of the work.
-1320801137920We wanted to know how much free time our classmates have and what they prefer to do. We were interested what hobbies are the most popular among us and to give some advice about arranging free time.
It turned out, that 16 people (53%) think that free time - is time free from school and clubs, 36% - time free from school and doing homework.
We think it is the most correct answer. Our results proved that some teens don’t understand the sense of free time. Perhaps, some of them consider activities at clubs as obligatory work.
Our classmates don’t have much free time. Only 2 teens have 7 hours of free time every day! They are lucky! Or maybe they don’t know what to do? In average our classmates have 4 hours of free time. It seems not so little!
41205156543040Pupils often say that teachers give them a lot of homework. They have to do it the whole afternoon and the whole evening and they don’t have time for other activities. Our results show that only 3% (1 person) does homework for 4-5 hours. The average time is 2-2,5 hours. We should admit that it is normal; it means that our teachers don’t overwork us. Unfortunately, there are students who manage to do homework in 40 minutes. We doubt that it is careful work. We wondered what subjects were the most time-consuming. These were English and Mathematics, the easiest one was Society Study.
What do our classmates do in their free time?
We are glad that 80% (24 students) join clubs and sport sections. It is a good way to spend free time, because it helps to develop physically and mentally, it teaches to plan your activities during the day, to be responsible, it helps to make new friends.
The most popular clubs are dancing (10 students, 33%), music school (playing the piano – 7 students, 23%), sport activities (basketball, boxing).
29 students (97%) like to go out with their friends in free time. We hope that you walk in a good surrounding without bad habits!
As teenagers all over the world our classmates like to watch TV (11 students, 36%). We found out that only 2 students watch it for 4 hours a day. In average, we watch TV programs for 1.5 hours and 3 students don’t watch them at all. Computer takes the second place. In the whole our classmates spend in front of the screen 2-3 hours. 18 student) use it for communication, 12 teenagers – for searching for optional information, 6 persons play computer games (20%). We have already spoken about the danger of supernormal passion of computer games.
Unfortunately, the time in front of computer turns into a useless waste of time.
That’s why we give you some pieces of advice how to spend free time with interest and benefit.
The best ways to spend free time.
So, what to do in free time?
Human life is short, so don’t waste precious minutes and hours for rubbish. Let’s think about ways of spending free time. We offer you some options.
Self-education.Optional knowledge and skills are useful. They are necessary in work, in study, in different life situations. They will help you to become more erudite. What are the ways of self-education?
Learning foreign languages. English is the most popular. You can also study other European languages (French, Italian, German). European languages will be useful if you are going to visit European countries. Besides good knowledge of a language may be an optional source of income: you can translate articles, texts and others.
Improvement of brain activity. It is training of memory, attention, mental abilities, logic, and intelligence. There are different exercises and tests that can help you to achieve great results. Do it and improve the work of your brain!
Reading is a very actual and useful hobby that develops an individual, gives new knowledge and broadens the mental outlook. You can read fiction, fantasy, detectives, historical, scientific or specialized literature – any book will be valuable for your personal growth.
Part – time job.If you have a lot of free time, then part – time job is the best way to spend it. What can it be?

These are only some options of part-time jobs in free time.
Spending time with relatives.To spend free time with family members and relatives is perhaps the best way. We all are busy all the time. All of us have a lot of things to do. That’s why we see our relatives not so often. How can we spend our time with our families? There are some ways:
a family dinner with lovely conversation. Put the whole family together at the tasty meal!
watching a family movie together. There are films that will be interesting both for children and adults;
the evening of board games. Arrange family competitions in different games with sweet prizes for winners;
go into the park, zoo or onto the playground.
Hobbies.How do you spend free time? A person who has a hobby always gives you an answer. This is because he always does something interesting, something new.
What hobbies can you choose?
writing tales, poems;
handicraft (sewing, embroidery, knitting). You can do a lot of fine things with your own hands.
making unusual things for home decoration. You can design your rooms in a unique style;
studying biographies of famous people;
playing musical instruments;
writing blogs in the Internet;
walking in the suburbs of the town;
studying. Remember, that you study only for yourself, not for parents or teachers. Use your free time to revise the material and to get ready for tests, exams or essays.
Do your parents often say that your room is untidy? Then it is high time to clean it. You may think it is boring but really useful.
The Internet is not only social nets, pictures of lovely kittens and funny videos. Haven’t you got an idea to become a master of Photoshop, to watch foreign films in original, to grow unusual vegetables? The world web will provide you with various lessons, self-help books and video – advice.
Don’t forget about reading. The book is a good alternative to TV or the Internet. Read different genres of books. Then you will broaden your outlook, your speech will be better, the level of your intellect will be higher.
Another useful kind of art is cinema. But we mean not stupid comedies but festival’s films, classics of world cinema. The list of the best films you can easily find in the Internet.
Don’t stay at home. Take your friends and go out. Fresh air is useful for your health.
We have given you some options for spending free time. In any case, don’t waste it! Don’t switch TV canals without thinking, don’t sit in front of the screen of a computer, and don’t turn into a coach potato! Study, develop, show interest! Your life should be full of bright events, unforgettable impressions and positive emotions!
Time – management
We found out that some of our classmates spend too much time doing homework. We decided to help them and turned to the strategy of time management. We worked out a set of recommendation.
What is Time Management?
It seems that there is never enough time in the day. But, since we all get the same 24 hours, why is it that some people achieve so much more with their time than others? The answer lies in good time management.
“Time management” refers to the way that you organize and plan how long you spend on specific activities.
At school time management becomes increasingly challenging. There are tons of things all day, every day that are important and interesting. Time management at school becomes a student's ability to prioritize the most important things - and to let go of other things that may not be as critical.
Every student spends a lot of time studying and almost every one of them would like their studying to be more efficient. These are a few basic tips for effective studying. Apply these ideas when you're studying and soon you will see a big improvement in how you manage your time and your study productivity.
Minimize distractions Many things can be distractions to studying: loud music, an interesting programme on TV. Watching TV whilst studying is a very bad idea and makes your studying really ineffective. Make sure there's nothing nearby that might distract you. If you love surfing the net, turn off the internet while you study. If you are totally into video games, discipline yourself to only play them after you have finished your studying as a reward. Don't put the video games anywhere near your study area. You might need to find another place to study to concentrate properly.
Study period lengths The best way to study is to focus for between 40 and 90 minutes, then take a 10 minute break.
Don't make your breaks too long. 40 minutes of studying and then a half hour break is not effective because you then get totally out of the flow. DON'T WATCH TV OR PLAY COMPUTER GAMES DURING THIS BREAK, because it will interfere with your proper study routine. Instead, the best thing you can do is 10 minutes of exercise. It can be a quick run, some aerobics or whatever other exercise you like doing, but make it something that's quick. Exercise gets your mind off the studying and helps you concentrate.
Scheduling Setting strict times for studying is a good way to go. Studying at the same time each and every day helps. It's really hard to be disciplined about this sort of thing, so you probably need someone to help you keep to the routine that you set. Other strategies to help you keep to your schedule: you can put a reminder on your phone to buzz you when it's time to study, or you can write the times you've set for your study above your desk. Make sure to do your most difficult subjects first. You can do the slightly easier stuff at other times when you might not have quite as much energy or focus.
Set a list of your to-dos It's important to write a list of all the things you need to study. Plan it carefully, and be very specific on this list. So instead of saying “study maths” write something specific such as “read pages 34-58 of the mathematics textbook.” When you accomplish each task tick it off the list.
Watch what you eat Eating a lot of sugary foods is really bad for your concentration. You need to eat foods with a minimum of sugar, and also reduce white bread and other simple carbohydrates. Coffee is actually not too bad for your concentration if you drink it only occasionally.
Other important tips
Get plenty of sleep. Most people need at least 8 hours per night. Your brain needs sleep to recover and to help remember information more effectively.
Choose carefully what you do during your relaxation and down time. Relaxing your mind is important during study breaks, but TV, video games and other stimulating activities will not allow you to relax properly. Exercise, on the other hand, is a great thing to do during a break.
The results of our work show that teenagers are not right when they claim that they don’t have enough free time. In fact we are a happy generation because we have all opportunities to study and to develop. But we shouldn’t confuse “free time” and “waste of time” and we shouldn’t fill our free time with meaningless activities. There are a lot of ways to make our life bright and interesting.
Of course, you may ask what how we spend our free time. Now we present you our hobbies.
“My hobby is drawing. Last summer I graduated from art school. There I learnt to imitate drawing nature, beautiful buildings, human faces and bodies, animals and birds. Drawing made me observe the world around me; it made me more patient and attentive. Today drawing is much fun to me. I can spend hours working at a new picture. I want to mention that my parents have always praised me and supported me. My drawings decorate our house. The best presents for my parents’ birthdays were my drawings. Drawing has really become an important part of my life. It brings me satisfaction and I hope that one day it will help me to achieve great progress and goals.” (Rasvolyaeva Dariya)
“My hobby is dancing. I have been doing dancing at art school since my childhood. Every dance has its own particularities. My group performed modern and Russian folk dances. We often took part in dancing competitions in our town and other cities. We won prizes. In 2014 we went to the camp, where we studied new dances. It was exciting. Dancing helps not only my physical development. It works on mental and emotional level. I would like to study new styles and get new experience. In my opinion dance is a good way to keep fit and be healthy. When you dance, you can relax, and dance makes you really happy.” (Kanakhina Krisitina)
