I‱m Margie. I‱m ele ven. I don‱t go to school. In fact, yes, I do. I have school every day except Saturday and Sunday. But my school is near my bedroom. So I don‱t leave the house to learn things. To tell you the truth, I don‱t like school. My teacher gives me test after te st which I have to write out in a code, which learnt when I was six. My friend Tommy found an old book, a real paper book. Today, before my school we read it together. In the old school they had human teachers. Strange, isn‱t it? How can a man know as m uch as a mechanical teacher? I can hardly believe it. But Tom says his father knows as much as a teacher. And all the kids had to go to a special building called school. The teachers came there too. The kids of the same age had to learn the same things. Unbelievable! Mum says that the teacher must fit the mind of each boy and girl it teaches and that each kid has to be taught differently. I‱ve just had my arithmetic lesson. It was on the addition of proper fractions. For tomorrow I have to do a test in a n ugly code and put it in the slot. They had it better in their old schools. They laughed and shouted in the school yard and sat together in the schoolroom, went together home at the end of the day. They learnt the same things so they could help one anot her with the homework and talk about it. They must have had a lot of fun. And the teachers were people. (with a sigh) 2 Hello. My name‱s Tommy! I‱m 13 years old. Like my friend Margie, I don‱t go to school. My school is at home. School is OK but I wi sh I had it somewhere in a place where we all could go. I‱m sociable and like being with other boys and girls. Margie doesn‱t like school mainly because of her tests. Her geography teacher once started to work a little too quick. Her mum sent even for the County Inspector. The Inspector took Margie‱s teacher apart and put it together again. He didn‱t take it away like he did with mine when my history sector was out of order completely. Then I didn‱t have school for a whole week. I found a real book today. It was in the attic. The book is really old and it‱s about school. Margie wanted to read it together with me. She has never heard of the schools of the past before. She can‱t catch how it was possible for girls and boys to go to a regular school and lear n the same 5 things for the kids of the same age. But she got interested in common activities boys and girls had at school and after it. I tried to explain her that the teacher in old school had been a man. She could hardly believe it. She thinks that a h uman teacher can‱t be as smart as a mechanical teacher. She doesn‱t believe either that my dad knows almost as much as a teacher. Silly she! However, when mum called her to school she asked me to read the book with her again later. Приложение 3 What‱ s the ideal of a teacher to you? 1. Is your ideal teacher a man or a woman? 2.
